Bye bye Budweiser?

Budweiser: “The Great American Lager,” or possibly soon to be the former Great American Lager. If the Belgian company, InBev, has its way, Anheuser-Busch will become the latest foreign acquisition.

InBev has recently offered Anheuser-Busch $46 billion to acquire our proud company. If this happens future profits, technology and jobs will reside within Belgium. As the past has demonstrated, once we lose a company to foreign acquisitions domestic firms lose the ability to compete in the American market, our ability to produce is destroyed, and our dependence on imports increased.

This iconic firm must not change ownership, but must remain ours for its heritage and symbolism of an American legacy of greatness. Nothing less than the competitiveness of the American economy is at stake.

Source Yumsugar:

There is no other beer as quintessentially American as Budweiser. With its red, white, and blue label, the beer is known around the world as the American brew. But, how would you feel if the “great American lager” was no longer owned by an American company?

Big time Belgian brewer InBev, which makes Stella, Becks, and many other brews, has offered to buy Anheuser-Busch’s beer. Both Americans and Belgians are outraged by the possible takeover. Americans — who are putting up a fight at savebudweiser.com — don’t want to lose the national symbol, and the Belgians don’t want to be associated with it.

Belgium does not know much about beer making. Hofbrau does. Budweiser is the only drink I will consume over in North America. It might be wise to let the brand go, so that we can get some competition, so that we can get some real beer into the country.

Actually, budweiser is originally from the budweis region of the holy roman empire (budweis is now part of the czech republic) and in europe the name ‘budweiser’ is actually trademarked to a czech company, so not all the world thinks of budweiser as ‘quintessentially American’. Sorry. Although here in Britain we do think of budweiser as american, as the czechs sell their version as budvar over here. Also I’d have to disagree with the idea that belgium ‘doesnt know much about beer making’. Although they cant claim to have invented lager (that was the czechs again, the drunkards), they’ve been at it since the Dark Ages, and while drinks like stella are quite frankly piss for the foreign market, belgium has produced some fine examples of the brewers art.
